Post subject: V4 Stopped working at the beginning of the month for servers

I just got word from some organizations that are using V4 that all of a sudden V4 has stopped connecting. Two different locations reported this problem at the same time. This leads me to believe that something has changed at your authentication server. Is this true?

No, FirstSpot only checks the license once during startup phase. It won't stop FirstSpot when it is running.

Post subject: I think I didn't explain it well enough

Two different servers in two different cities both running V4. They have both been running fine for years.

BOTH server stopped authenticating on start-up about 10 days ago. NEITHER server can get out of Trial Mode, because neither server can authenticate with your server. Is this just a tremendous coincidence, or has PatronSoft changed something at the beginning of July with regards to the authentication of v4?

We haven't had any report of license problem.

If you still have difficulties, please reproduce the issue, and then email us at firstspot@patronsoft.com your firstspot_gw_srv_[timestamp].log under FirstSpot\log directory for further analysis.

Post subject: Anything you can see in this

We keep getting an error that the license key is invalid. The card has not been changed. We've copied back the license key from a backup folder, have rebooted, and done everything we can think of.

For "invalid license key" error, it is not related to the online check at all.

Please double-check your Visitor/Private Network Interface MAC address. Sometimes the network driver is corrupted and it incorrectly reports the MAC address.

13/07/2010 18:54:48 Fail to start

We've checked both NIC's and they appear to be working fine. I realize that is not the same as FS being able to get all the info it needs, but the private and public NIC's have not been changed and both NIC's can be seen and work for viewing other computers or the internet.

I'd hate to go through the process of replacing the NIC again and getting a key again, but is that our only option to test this?

Post subject: Thank you

By the way, thank you for the quick replies. There are 120 people that are relying upon the system to work for the their internet. They have had no internet for several days now. Getting this working is helping lots of people that have no other access than this.

Somehow, your flipped the network card! The 00-50-BA-BE-25-9F is in our record but 00-50-BA-AD-68-98 is not.

Please flip the network card, either by reinstalling or referring to point 9 readme.rtf, and your license key problem should be resolved.

BTW, are you interested in upgrading to the current v6? One of the feature we want to highlight is In-Browser Message which gives hotspot operators a much better way to communicate with the clients. Feel free to check out http://patronsoft.com/firstspot for more information about the latest version.

Post subject: Upgrading

I would be interested, except:
1) my installations are for non-profit organization's private use and not making money. They don't have much
2) I've added a lot of tools for them to use that work alongside V4. I'm sure I would have to rewrite all the code if we upgraded
3) The program has been working fine for 4 years. Don't want to change it just to have features they never use.

I'll see what they have done and have them reset the cards. The funny thing is that the NICs are physically labeled ADSL and LAN. They are still that way. Not sure how this could be. I thought the key was connected to the PUBLIC NIC in V4. Its been a while, but I'll see about having them switch the cards, replace the labels that are on the NIC and try it.
